Why We're Drawn To Certain Colours During Different Seasons Of Life

Have you ever noticed how the colours you're drawn to change over time?

There are seasons where all you want to wear is black.

Seasons where you suddenly crave softness.

Seasons where earthy tones feel grounding or where bright colour feels almost overwhelming to look at.

Often, we assume these choices are random.

A trend.

A phase.

A style preference

But colour has always been deeply connected to emotion, identity, energy and the nervous system.

The colours we surround ourselves with, and choose to wear, often reflect something much deeper happening beneath the surface.

Colour As Protection

Many women move through periods of life where they instinctively reach for darker colours oversized silhouettes, or muted palettes.

Sometimes this happens during:

  • burnout

  • grief

  • transition

  • motherhood

  • heartbreak

  • stress

  • periods of emotional overwhelm

Dark colours can feel containing.

Protective.

Safe.

They create distance between us and the outside world.

A kind of visual armour.

And sometimes thats exactly what the body is asking for.

Colour As Expansion.

Then there are the seasons where something begins to soften.

A woman who once wore only black suddenly finds herself drawn to team, olive, honey, blush or soft blue.

Not because someone told her to.

But because something within her is changing.

As women reconnect with themselves, regulate their nervous systems, heal emotionally, or step more fully into their identity, their relationship with colour often shifts too.

The colours that once felt comforting may suddenly feel heavy.

The colours that once felt "too much" may begin to feel alive.

The Difference Between Trend and Resonance.

Fashion constantly tells women who they should become next.

But true personal style is less about becoming someone else, and more about recognising what already feels aligned.

This is why two women can wear the exact same outfit and experience it completely differently.

One feels elegant and energised.

The other feels disconnected, uncomfortable or strangely invisible.

The difference is not confidence.

Its harmony.

Returning to Yourself

At Zotiah, we believe personal colour is about far more than appearance.

Its about understanding the relationship between:

  • colour

  • energy

  • emotion

  • identity

  • self expression

Because often, the colours we are most naturally drawn toward are quietly telling a story about where we are and who we are becoming.

Not every season of life asks us to shine brightly.

Some ask us to rest

Some ask us to soften

Some ask us to return to ourselves slowly.

And sometimes, discovering the colours that truly harmonise with you becomes part of that return.
